Programme Update: May 2017

By on

The project has received its first Considerate Constructor Scheme (CCS) monitor visit. The visit involved the CCS monitor meeting with the project team, whilst reviewing the site’s appearance and operations. Out of the five categories available, the site scored excellent in three categories and very good in the remaining two categories. With the feedback received from the monitor during the visit, the site team are looking ahead to the next visit whereby they will be targeting achieving excellent across all five categories.

On May 11th the site celebrated our Ground Breaking, an event attended by the Mayor of Hackney and Richard Brown, Head teacher of New Regent’s College, who spoke about his aspirations of building a college where students feel that they are being invested in and have a bright future ahead of them filled with opportunity and the ability to succeed in life.

Works during May 2017

During May, we have completed construction of the basement wall’s capping beam, which has enabled us to begin the excavation of the new basement area. As we have excavated the basement, we have exposed the tower’s foundation piles. Using a hydraulic cutter, we have begun cutting the concrete of the piles down to their correct level. The hydraulic cutter has enabled us to reduce the noise and dust that would normally be caused by using a hydraulic hammer to break up the concrete.

June 2017

During June, we will continue with the basement excavation. The site is also due to receive connection to a temporary power supply, enabling the removal of the existing generators that power the site. As the excavation of the new basement continues, construction of the new basement slab will commence.

Planned works for June

  • Basement excavation continues
  • Basement slab construction commences
  • Tower crane base completed
  • Site temporary power supply connected

Tower Crane Installation

During the weekend of 8-9th July, the site will extend its opening hours to facilitate the erection of our first tower crane. A mobile crane (that will be set up in Nile Street between the junctions of Westland Place and Britannia Walk) will undertake erection of the tower crane. Vehicle traffic will be redirected (as appropriate) to avoid a temporary road closure.

Neighbours will receive a letter during the middle of June outlining how the tower crane erection will be managed and show the extent, if any, of any temporary road closures in Nile Street.

We support Hackney Council in recruiting local labour. The project has and will, place advertisements locally for job roles and opportunities as they become available.  If you are interested in a career in construction or associated occupations please visit waysintowork[at]

We will endeavour to use the best practicable measures to minimise disruption and inconvenience during the course of our works.  However, should you have any queries about the project, please do not hesitate to contact us on NewRegentsCollege[at]
